When all is said and done and no one is around, no phones beeping away, no work in sight and you are all alone.. who are you then?
Are you more familiar with your professional life than you are with your personal life?
We are ‘human beings’ not ‘human doings’.
We need to ‘be’ before we ‘do’. Who you are, precedes what you do. This means that whatever you do must be based on who you are. Unfortunately most people are defined by what they do and not who they are. When you have it in reverse like this, you will eventually experience tension, stress and eventually break down. Your being is the life source that sustains your doing, and in order to keep on being productive, inspired and resourceful, you have to keep growing.
Here’s the thing… without a plan, you are growing nowhere
Personal growth doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not an automatic process. If you want to guarantee growth, then you need a plan and your plan must be strategic,‎ specific and scheduled.
“If a person will spend one hour a day on the same subject for five years, that person will be an expert on that subject.”Earl Nightingale

This goes to show that if you spend time on ‘you’ intentionally the sky is not your limit, you are. Take some time to develop a more intentional plan for your personal growth‎

Here’s how you can get started: ‎

  • Set aside time to grow.
The secret to success is determined by your daily agenda. It’s the things we do consistently that usually count. You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. Oftentimes, we get hyped up to learn something new, and then quickly abandon the project as soon as our initial excitement subsides. To sustain growth, we need to schedule it. If you do not set a time for your growth, other things will grab your time. Do not leave this to chance.
  • Identify your areas of growth.
Don’t follow the crowd. You need to be in touch with yourself, your personality, You. Choose to grow in the areas of your strengths, and NOT in the areas of your weakness. This may not be as easy as it sounds, this is because the system of the world pressures us to conform, and go by the accepted standards. We’re taught to be well-rounded and to improve our weaknesses. However, studies have shown that we naturally perform poorly in many areas of life. Even with hard work, we will never become better than average in those areas. The reality is that people don’t pay for average. No one gets excited to drive an average car, to spend two hours watching an average movie, or to hire someone with average abilities.
Success comes when identify our natural talents, and then work diligently to develop them into extraordinary skills. Concentrate on fine-tuning your strengths, on climbing from above-average to excellent in an area, rather than on shoring up your weaknesses. When you stray from your strengths, you not only limit yourself, but you also negatively impact your team.
  • Find resources in your area of growth.
Stay close to passionate people who stir up your curiosity. Associate with fellow learners who will challenge your thinking and inspire you to grow. Subscribe to great podcasts, read books in your choosing area of focus. If you do not have time to read you can get audio books. And if you can afford it, seriously consider getting yourself a coach, find a mentor in your specific focus area.
  • Apply what you have learned.
The whole exercise of seeking knowledge is fruitless unless you find a way to apply what you have learned. This is really like always eating and never using the loo.. ugly right? One helpful practice is to follow the 24-hour rule. Every time you’ve learned something significant, share the lesson with someone else within 24 hours. If you do not practice or pass along what you have learned, then it will not become part of your life and you’ll lose it.
Growth is the great separator of those who succeed and those who do not.
Do you have a growth plan?
When are you growing?
In which areas are you growing?
Who is helping you to grow?
How are you applying what you learn?
